Spring in the Oregon Desert: hardly any dust, riding among pronghorn sheep herds, drowning my bike and self in frigid ice-bottomed puddles, heaping lunches in Brothers, great people, and lots and lots of awesome riding.
More photos from several rides in the rest of this entry and in the photo galleries, here and here.
Videos of Kurt and Dave on the trail: video #1 and video #2

I loaded the Triumph up on a weekend in April and rode up to Portland. Why?
1) Because I could. I’m taking a sabatical from work.
2) The Oregon Trail Rally was in town, a pro auto stage rally. Sounded like a fun place to hang out.
3) I also want to check out the supermoto racing at Pat’s Acres this weekend.
Stages 1-6 used bits of the track at PIR as well as access roads surrounding it and in the infield. The following day, I caught up with the rally in the mountains west of Portland. Click here for rally photos.

From there I rode out to Pat’s Acres by Canby. I’m setting up my dirt bike up for supermoto and wanted to see what I am getting myself into. Click here for rally photos.

When I announced that I was taking a leave-of-absence from work, a Norwegian collegue asked me what I planed to do. “It’s winter,” I said, lamenting the Oregon weather and the timing. “Probably do some backcountry skiing.” He replied, “I’m sure the skiing in Oregon is nice, but why don’t you join our annual hut-to-hut tour in Norway.” It took me about 22 seconds to make up my mind.

I left Wednesday afternoon with plans to visit the most remote corner of the state on my way to Baker City. Wednesday got me to Burns with only few few drops of rain on my faceshield. This put me within striking distance of the Jordon Valley area.

Thursday morning saw me riding through the chilly high desert. Past Rome, I turned off on the dirt road headed toward the Owyhee Canyon and Three Forks. The road ride was not exciting, but nevertheless enjoyable. But this is where the real fun started.

After 22 miles of quick desert riding, I reached the Owyhee Canyon overlook.
